Angelo Bernacchi Greenhouses was founded by a young Italian immigrant with a strong work ethic and a dream for a better life. Angelo Benacchi was just fifteen when he left his family behind in1906 and arrived in the United States.

His final destination that year was La Porte, Indiana. Angelo purchased a push cart from W. C. Wegner & Sons Blacksmith Shop (Monroe Street) and began selling fruits and vegetables door-to-door in this quaint Indiana town. Angelo soon expanded the door-to-door business, building a greenhouse and growing vegetables for wholesale. He and his wife Enis raised seven sons and became an integral part of the LaPorte community – known for the quality of his plants, and the integrity and honesty with which he ran his business.

Today, Angelo Bernacchi Greenhouse is still owned and operated by the Bernacchi family. On your next visit, make sure you see the replica of Angelo’s original push cart built by grandson Bart Bernacchi.

Wine Press - circa 1915

The Bernacchi family has many great memories of Angelo and Enis. This wine press was used by Angelo beginning in 1915, and the Bernacchi sons remember the joys of helping their parents make homemade wine every October, when the California Zinfandel grapes were in season.

After a long day of hard work in the greenhouses and store, the whole family looked forward to the Fall --- and the fun! Angelo would travel to Chicago’s market and bring the freshest of grapes home in his truck, or by train. The whole family participated in the winemaking process, which took three to four weeks - from crushing the grapes to placing them in fifty-five gallon wooden barrels.
